Puzzle prepping the roof
Ouch! Suddenly time passes by so fast. We had to deal with a nasty flu, welcomed our son and his girlfriend for a long awaited visit, worked many hours on the normal Dutch office job and had to beam ourselves to and from the Algarve to handle some other family matters. Meanwhile so much has happened on the building site!

We introduce a new page on this website, although you may already have found it yourself: Building development. The same series of three angles from which you can follow the changes of the construction.
Shoe-box
There was some confusion about the height of the roof, or more explicit: the distance between final floor and ceiling. You can work out every detail in your architectural drawing but you will still have to deal with: a. who reads the drawing and b. how is the information interpreted. Then c. how are we used to build houses in this country and d. how do all parties in this project communicate with each other. On to e.: are you sufficiently aware, being boss of this project, that you have checked, monitored, measured a. till d. so that you can f. adjust the process before there is no turning back. Are you still following me? The eaves will now be constructed at the right height. Because if the ceiling in our rooms is too high it will be a reverberating cathedral, and when too low, it may turn out to be a miserable shoe-box.
Craftsmanship
Can you see how they are puzzling every detail together to prepare the construction of the roof beams? In the Netherlands this process is often more industrialized, or created with prefab parts. Here we have fathers and sons working together in their lifetime experience. Every part supported by jack posts and wooden parts. This preparation work will take some time. Before the truck with more concrete arrives to pour its contents for the roof.
Luís stands on his future porch to enjoy the scenery. A scenery that can change by the hour. Because of the weather, the clouds, the light, the temperature, the season. Sometimes you see a lot of depth, and sometimes the whole top of the mountain has disappeared in low hanging clouds. Sometimes there is the herd of sheep and goat passing through, and sometimes you can see all the tiny houses of Pragança in the far distance. Sometimes you hear the twittering of a million birds, and then again their sound is drowned out by a flock of ultimately cool (…) engine devils that need to conquer our beautiful mountain with their motor cycles on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Just because the direction of the wind allows this sound to reach us.
